Digital has changed our world and our consumption patterns considerably, but what about its impact on the organization of companies? Can a company still survive without taking it into account and using it within its structure (and not only to have a community)? Digital can bring many fruits to all structures. But it can also create new obstacles that it is important to know before any modification process.

An evolution of the notion of work in the general organization of the company

Lifestyles are evolving due to the ever-increasing interference of digital technology, and your employees and their needs have also evolved. The porosity between professional and personal life is becoming more and more important (who has never checked his professional emails on vacation or in the evening before going to sleep?)

Thus, being able to work from wherever you want becomes an essential notion. Telecommuting is developing and this situation is not ready to stop… Thus, to allow your collaborators to work remotely, it is necessary to use adequate tools to not lose (or even gain) productivity.

These new tools must not only allow you to work from anywhere, but also to collaborate with others. These are true collaborative networks that must be created within the company so that information circulates as quickly as possible. Efficiency must be the key to ensuring that the various departments work together as quickly as possible. Different methods, with a strong emphasis on digital technology, can be implemented (such as Agile or Lean methods, for example).

Moreover, these collaborative networks can partly be opened to real customers, to give them a real place, to get quick feedback on a project or a new product for example. Thanks to this opening, it is possible to facilitate the booking of appointments.

The time thus freed up and the collaborations encouraged will allow your employees to develop new talents (notably through training, also encouraged by digital tools). Moreover, working in atypical places, places they like will develop their creativity.

But what about the manual worker? Digital can also bring him fruits. Indeed, it can bring him, for example, more comfort in the production or a better understanding of his tasks in the global process, the possibility of training at lower cost, a better reactivity, an improvement of the communication with the management, … The digital allows more transparency, being able to decrease the misunderstandings and thus decrease the conflicts of work.

But new obstacles are appearing in the company’s organization

The first of these obstacles, and not the least, is the cost which can be important for a modest structure. Each structure will of course have different costs. Indeed, the masonry company that will share the planning with its employees via Google Calendar will have costs infinitely lower than a company that will modify its production chain by integrating 3D tools.

The second obstacle, also very important, is the resistance to change of employees. Those who have been with the company for years, who have their own habits and personal work procedures, will find it difficult to use new tools. You have to be particularly vigilant with them and integrate them from the beginning of the transformation process.

Furthermore, for this digital transformation to work, management must set an example. It is necessary that it also uses these new tools, otherwise, all the work done will have been in vain.

Final point

These are the two main obstacles that can slow down or even prevent the digital transformation of your company. There are a few other obstacles, but they are much less important and less prevalent (like the legal framework for example).

Obtaining productivity gains, and having happier and better-trained employees who understand the ins and outs, are the promises of digital transformation for your organization, despite some obstacles.
